Jules Verne books are great. Jules Verne was a French science fiction writer who wrote books in the 1800s. The one I am reading now is called “From the Earth to the Moon. I love reading old science fiction because it is so interesting to see how people back then imagined it would be like now. This story is actually set in the 1860s and it is about some men who built a rocket ship to go to the moon. It is fun to see the similarities and absurdities between the 1860s imagination of space travel and what we found to be true over 100 years later.
In this story, 3 people flew in a space ship called “Columbiad” and left from Florida.
That is almost a prophesy considering that one day 3 people did blast off from Florida on an Apollo 11 rocket in a command module named “Columbia” and flew to the moon.
I recently had the opportunity to go on a one week mission trip to Haiti. It was a good growing experience for me and for my relationship with God. One thing that God taught me during the trip was the concept of the mustard seed kingdom.
While waiting in a small airport in Haiti I felt compelled to pray for the many people around me who did not know God. I prayed, “How can I make a difference when there are so many lost people?” Yet I felt God’s prompting so I went and talked to two taxi drivers.During the week of working with the missionaries we saw many people who had many physical and spiritual needs, yet we could only help a few. One day I was reading my Bible and I came to Matt 13:31-32. In this passage Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a mustard seed which is very small but grows into something very big. Could it be that God can take small things and make big things out of them? This verse was a great encouragement because it was a reminder to me that God can do just that when I act in obedience to Him.
Our God is Creator and God of the universe and all things big. He is also God over me and all things small. The Kingdom of Heaven is great but it is also the Kingdom of the mustard seed.
God is asking me to take small steps of obedience in some areas. I must take these steps and not be discouraged that I can’t do everything perfect… because the Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed. He is showing me that I can’t do everything but I can do a little. I can’t help everyone but I can help someone. I can’t be perfect but I can receive a little more Grace each day and by God’s Grace I can become a little more like Him.
